Kerstin Serz Contemporary Artist Berlin

about

Kerstin Serz came to Berlin in the 90s to study at the UdK. The relationships between human figures, animals, and plants form the fundamentals of her pictorial themes.  By combining these fragmented elements in intricate ways, her work develops a language of the surreal in a cosmos unique to her art.

Immobile Life

In her most recent exhibition, Kerstin Serz takes the classic genre of still life painting  into the dimensions of the present. A variety of materials and juxtapositions are explored, where meat and stone almost become indistinguishable.

 Mannsblut

01 endless summer

In German the flower found in this still life is called "Mannsblut", which translates into "men's blood". Located in the predominately female-associated shell, this painting alludes to the inversions of traditional power structures and the significance of blood. The steak, a dish that can be described as more masculine, is suppressed by the shell who bears the flower. "Mannsblut"  is a visual stacking of our preconceptions of gender-roles, and their arbitrariness .

It is uncertain, whether the moth is forcing the leopard to open his mouth, or the moth has been trapped.
